6 Field Battery Royal Artillery
6 Field Battery was formed in Flanders during the Austrian Succession War in September 1743 and in 1745 fought at Fontenoy before redeploying to Scotland to suppress the Jacobite rebellion at Culloden in the same year. The Battery fought in the Americas throughout the American War of Independence and in the Napoleonic Wars fought in the Penninsular Campaign, taking part in the bombarment of the Spanish Fleet at Cadiz Harbour.
The first half of the 19th Century was spent inthe West Indies and Canada and later, during the Crimean War, the Battery saw action at the Siege of Sebastopol. The latter half of the 19th Century was spent in Ceylon and Canada and World War One was passed quitely in the United Kingdom. In 1927 the Battery became part of 27 Field Regiment when it formed as 1st Heavy Brigade. The Battery was part of the British Expeditionary Force in 1938-39 and took part in the liberation of Europe suffering heavy casualties in the Falaise Gap.
